O. A. Beath Selenium database
The O. A. Beath Database addresses the many and varied aspects of selenium research. It organizes and makes available citations that lead to the published literature about selenium.
Dr. Beath, a professor at UW in the first half of the 20th century, was paramount in recognizing the links between the geologic distribution of selenium, its accumulation in plants and the subsequent effect of the higher selenium concentrations in livestock that feed on such plants. It is in his honor that the Beath Database has been created and is maintained.
There is great interest in selenium, given the fact that selenium as a trace element is necessary for good health and nutrition in both humans and livestock, while an over-concentration can be toxic. The Database addresses the effects of selenium upon living systems, industrial uses of selenium and the origin of selenium in rocks and soils.
