Old Travois Trails
|
| Summary: |
This small regional bimonthly went through a series of subtitles over its short life: "A Magazine Devoted to the Study of Indians and the West," "A Magazine Devoted to the History and Literature of the West," and "The Voice of the Old West." It was edited by Charles D. Schreibeis and published at Banner, WY at the restored portion of Fort Phil Kearny. It emphasized history of the Powder River region with some poetry and book reviews; virtually every issue was topical, with some repetitions as the following list indicates: 1 (1) John Phillips, 1 (2) Father DeSmet, 1 (3) Tongue River, 1 (4) Powder River, 1 (6) Fetterman Disaster, 2 (1) John Phillips, 2 (2) Wagon Box Fight, 2 (3) Custer, 2 (4) Yellowstone, 2 (5) John Colter, 2 (6) General Bisbee, 3 (1) Wagon Box Fight, 3 (2) Red Fork, and 3 (3) Bingham. Its illustrations included photos, drawings, and reproductions of paintings which almost disappeared during last year. Letters and a regular historical summary of the Fort are not indexed. The magazine had considerable local advertising but ceased publication after 15 issues following the death of the editor.
