challenges and successes

challenges:

Library lacks image collections/databases (lower priority than journal/book collections)

Library currently does not provide adequate technology for creating visual projects

Finding aids put more emphasis on text

Students choose path of least resistance in selecting images, research topics

Students struggle to select and synthesize information to build a case

Collaborating to integrate information literacy requires additional librarian time and class time taken away from visual literacy content

Librarians challenged to think about visual literacy in our own instruction presentations and handouts

successes:

Using visuals is an engaging way to find, think about, and present information

Students report being more sensitive to visuals around them

Students feel more comfortable consulting with librarians and utilizing library resources

Students revise search strategies and keywords to improve results, locating ample information and visuals

Sharing findings through a poster rather than a research paper is a plus for many students

Collaborating to integrate information literacy reinforces IL concepts; models professional collaboration for pre-service teachers

Librarians are more conscientious about visual literacy principles
