To Find Books: Log in by clicking “off-campus access”, then select “Find Books”.

Tips for using the UW Libraries Catalog:

  • Know the title? Key it in (leave off articles like “the” or “a”) and select “title”.
  • Know the author? Select “author” and type the last name first (e.g. Smith, James).
  • Searching for books on your topic? Select “keyword” and enter your keywords. From your list of results, click on a title to learn more about the book. Click on Request It to order the book.

To Find Articles: Log in by clicking "off-campus access", then select "Find Article Databases".

  • Academic Search Premier is an excellent beginning point to locate journal articles.
  • To search specific subjects such as nursing, business, education and psychology, highlight a subject in the drop down menu.
  • To find an online journal, log on through “off-campus access” and select “Find E-Journals”.

Tips for reading articles in library databases:

  • Click Find It at UW.
  • If a full-text copy is available, a link appears to the article.
  • If no online copy is available, you may order the article by clicking Request It.

Tips for finding better articles in library databases:
Getting too few articles?

  • Try fewer keywords or think of synonyms.
  • Borrow from the list of subject terms listed in the article citations.
  • Truncate keywords to search for variations on words (e.g. “censor*” searches censor, censored, censorship, and censors).

Getting too many articles?

  • Try keywords that are more precise (basketball vs. sports).
  • Select keywords in the “Narrow Results by Subject” column next to your results.
  • Select "Refine Search" to limit by peer reviewed, date, or document type.

To Access Electronic Reserves:

  1. Click on UW Libraries Catalog on the UW Libraries homepage (under Find information).
  2. Select the course reserves tab.
  3. Select one of the following: Instructor, Department, Course. The Instructor heading is usually the easiest way to locate an e-reserve.
  4. From the screen that pops-up select the Electronic Reserves entry for your class.
  5. Click on the link for your reading next to the heading E-items.
  6. Now log in with your UW username and password. Remember to read and check the box regarding copyright agreement.
  7. The item will open in Adobe Acrobat. Your PC must have Adobe Acrobat to view the item.
